David Gerstenfeld, MD, FACS

Dr. David Gerstenfeld received his undergraduate degree from Duke University.  He then attended medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he achieved the highest academic award, entry into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society.  Dr. Gerstenfeld then performed his residency training in ophthalmology at the Albert Einstein University Hospital system, where he gained experience learning under some of the top minds in the field at Montefiore Medical Center. 

He entered private practice in 1992 in Staten Island. Dr. Gerstenfeld was one of the first ophthalmic surgeons in the US to begin performing clear cornea topical anesthesia cataract surgery in the mid-1990s.  He has done thousands of cataract surgeries and trained many of the top young ophthalmologists in the world at the Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat hospital. 

Many of Dr. Gerstenfeld’s colleagues have come to observe his surgical techniques at the state of the art surgical suite at Staten Island University Hospital.  Today Dr. Gerstenfeld is at the cutting edge in both eye surgery in the operating room as well as office based laser surgery. Board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1993, Dr. Gerstenfeld is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Michael Nejat, MD, FACS

Dr. Michael Nejat received his Medical Degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.  Dr. Nejat was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor (AOA) Medical Society at Mount Sinai.  This honor is only bestowed to the top medical graduates. Dr Nejat completed his residency in ophthalmology at the prestigious Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, ranked as the #1 ophthalmology training program in New York by US New & World Report. 

Dr. Nejat was elected by his peers to serve as Chief Resident during his final year of residency. Upon completion of his required training, Dr. Nejat received additional training at the world renowned John’s Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute.  At Wilmer, he specialized in laser vision correction (LASIK), corneal transplantation and complicated cataract surgery. Dr. Nejat is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the State University of New York (SUNY Downstate).  He also has served as a clinical instructor and the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital and New York University.  He trains future ophthalmologists in state of the art corneal, cataract and refractive surgery.  He also has authored numerous articles peer reviewed journals and chapters in ophthalmology textbooks.

Dr. Nejat is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.  He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Dr. Nejat has practiced ophthalmology at Island Eye Surgery Specialists since 2000.  Along with Dr. David Gerstenfeld, they have been providing the Staten Island community with outstanding skill, quality, integrity and compassion.
